Mary Martin is a Sound Designer, Sound Artist and Soundscape Composer. She is best known for her work as a sound designer for theatre, having worked globally with many leading theatre companies, directors and also as Head of Sound for The Royal Exchange Theatre Company, Manchester , UK.

Mary was Sound Design Curator for the 2011 Prague Quadrennial and designed and curated the sound design section of Collaborators: Design for Performance exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. In 2007 She lead all the Sound Design projects for the Scenofest section of the Prague Quadrennial.

her current roles include, Head of The Sound Design Working Group for Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architectes de Théâtre (OISTAT), member of the organising team for World Stage Design 2013, Head of Sound for The Royal Exchange Theatre Company and Mary is also an elected Board Member for the Association of Sound Designers.

Mary was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance.

As Listen Hear Sound Projects She explores sound art, sound design, soundscape composition, phonography and audio ecology through many commissions and projects whilst working both as a collaborator and in her own right. She has collaborated with Steam Control ('Why Won't You Tell Me?' - National Film Theatre/ Sassoon Gallery) and was commissioned by Dody Nash (Listening Shell installation - Victoria & Albert Museum ), her work has been heard at the Sonar Festival, Barcelona, and in galleries across Europe. She recently collaborated on a work entitled 'Urban Soundscapes' for International Radiophonic Creation Day which was broadcast worldwide.

In recent years She has presented her work, ideas and promoted the work of Sound Designers at many Universities, Institutions and Conferences across Europe and the USA including, Yale and Purdue Universities, the United States Institute of Theatre Technology at conferences, in Toronto, Louisville, Houston, and Charlotte, The Institute of Design, Prague, The Theatre Academy, Helsinki, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Rose Bruford College, Edge Hill University, Liverpool, Vereniging voor Podiumtechnologie (VPT) in The Netherlands and PLASA UK.

Mary is currently exploring and investigating new ways of making theatre as part of collaborative project with fellow sound and multidisciplinary practitioners in the USA and Europe.
